چکیده

We quantify the effect of the spin-orbit interaction on the Rydberglike series of image state electrons at the (111) and (001) surface of Ir, Pt and Au. Using relativistic multiple-scattering methods we find Rashba-like dispersions with ∆E(K) = γK with values of γ for n = 1 states in the range 38 − 88 meV Å. Extending the phase-accumulation model to include spin-orbit scattering we find that the splittings vary like 1/(n + a) where a is the quantum defect and that they are related to the probability of spin-flip scattering at the surface. The splittings should be observable experimentally being larger in magnitude than some exchange-splittings that have been resolved by inverse photoemission, and are comparable to linewidths from inelastic lifetimes. Induced Rashba splitting of electronic states in monolayers of Au, Cu on a W(110) substrate

The paper sums up a theoretical and experimental investigation of the influence of the spin–orbit coupling in W(110) on the spin structure of electronic states in deposited Au and Cu monolayers. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals that in the case of monolayers of Au and Cu spin–orbit split bands are formed in a surface-projected gap of W(110). Spin resolution shows that these sta...

Spin–Orbit Energy State Splitting in Semiconductor Cylindrical and Spherical Quantum Dots

We present a theoretical study of the spin–orbit interaction impact on electron energy states in small cylindrical and spherical quantum dots. The investigation is based on the effective one-electronic band Hamiltonian and the spin dependent boundary conditions. It has been demonstrated that the spin–orbit interaction can significantly modify the energy spectrum of InAs and InSb quantum dots. T...

Giant anisotropy of spin-orbit splitting at the bismuth surface.

We investigate the bismuth (111) surface by means of time and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The parallel detection of the surface states below and above the Fermi level reveals a giant anisotropy of the spin-orbit spitting. These strong deviations from the Rashba-like coupling cannot be treated in k·p perturbation theory. Instead, first principles calculations could accurately repr...

Spin-resolved photoemission and ab initio theory of graphene/SiC

The spin-orbit splitting of grapheneπ states can be strongly enhanced by external influences such as corrugation or proximity to heavier atoms. Here we investigate experimentally and theoretically whether such strong enhancement is possible for graphene on SiC(0001). By spinand angle-resolved photoemission we found for two independently grown samples no resolvable spin-orbit splitting with an u...

Spin-orbit coupling and anisotropy of spin splitting in quantum dots.

In lateral quantum dots, the combined effect of both Dresselhaus and Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit coupling is equivalent to an effective magnetic field +/- B(SO) which has the opposite sign for s(z)= +/- 1/2 spin electrons. When the external magnetic field is perpendicular to the planar structure, the field B(SO) generates an additional splitting for electron states as compared to the spin splitti...
